Pre-Incarnate Existence
Share

Where was Jesus before his birth? That’s really what pre-incarnate means. Pre (before) incarnate (in flesh). The Scriptures and Jesus, Himself, make very clear statements.

Jesus claimed to have existed before Abraham (John 8:58)! In fact, if you read the passage, you’ll see that He was claiming more than that. The words “I AM” are the same words that God used with Moses at the burning bush. Jesus’ claim to be God angered the religious leaders so much that they picked up rocks to kill Him.

The opening of John’s gospel is very important to understanding Jesus’ role before His birth. In John 1:1-3 He is described as “the Word.” This Word was “In the beginning.” Remind you of anything? That’s right, Genesis 1:1. “In the beginning, GOD created the heavens and the earth.” John 1:3 states “all things were made through Him.” Jesus had a part in creation!

Before His birth, Jesus was with God! The “King eternal, immortal, invisible” God. Unfortunately, our sin separated us from God. We could never go to Him. He had to come to us.
