Resolutions

A good number of people like to make resolutions as a new year begins.  I am one of those people.  I just wish I was less guilty of breaking new year’s resolutions. 

As we continue to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, are you going to make any resolutions? 

I believe that the Messiah would encourage us to pick up a different practice other than making resolutions, commitments, vows, and promises.

It’s A Secret

As I was reading through this week’s Torah reading, I was reminded of a preacher from my childhood days.  He claimed to be able to answer any question concerning spiritual things with a Bible verse.

Whenever this preacher was given a question that he could not answer, he simply referred to Deuteronomy 29:29 and said, “That’s one of those secret things.”

In life, there are things that happen that we do not understand.  We can pray, seek, beg, and plead with God for an answer and still not receive one.

Why Am I Alive?

This week’s Torah reading (Deuteronomy 29:9–31:30) is exciting. 

Moses gathered all of the children of Israel together and exhorted them concerning, what I believe to be, the most important topic that could ever be addressed: the reason for man’s existence. 

As you read Deuteronomy 29:10–12, Moses tells the people, and I paraphrase, “You are alive today to enter into covenant with God.”

Zero Tolerance

In today’s world, you hear a lot about “zero tolerance” policies.  No longer is it “three strikes and you’re out.”

This concept is far from recent.  A casual reading of the Torah reveals that the children of Israel were very familiar with it. 

In verses like Deuteronomy 27:6, Deuteronomy 28:1, and Deuteronomy 28:15, the little word “all” has “zero tolerance” written all over it.
