I believe it is appropriate to ask God to clear your path for the day and seek his guidance. It certainly levels out the playing field.
What Will Today Be Like?
Do you ever wake up in the morning wondering what will transpire during the day?
Do you ever pillow your head at night hoping that tomorrow will be different? A better kind of different?
In this week’s Torah reading, which includes Deuteronomy 1:6,7, we have a partial answer to those questions.
As Israel was told to journey towards and possess their God-given land, God told them what they could expect to encounter along the way. They would either be in the “plains, the mountains, or the valleys”.
These three geographical designations are also symbolic of the three types of days we experience.
Today will either be a “plain” day: things will go smoothly, no major catastrophes, just a whole lot of the usual.
Today may be a “mountain top” day: something exciting may happen to you.
Or, today may be a “valley” day: a ‘Murphy’s Law’ day, if it can go wrong, it will go long.
The great thing revealed in this passage is that all three of these situations comprise the journey.
Life is a mixed bag.
What will your day be like? I do not have a clue. Neither do you.
So instead of asking an unanswerable question, let’s ask an unanswerable one: what will I do with this gift of today?
“Make the most of it,” I hope is your answer.
