Milk, Honey, and Work

Have you ever given much thought to the way God described the Promised Land: “a land flowing with milk and honey?”

This expression is found 20 times in the Bible.  One of the occurrences is found in this week’s Torah reading in Deuteronomy 6:3.

What comes to mind as you visualize a land flowing with milk?

Is the water that normally flows in creeks and streams replaced with milk?

Or, is God using figurative language to make a different point?

Could it be that God was saying that Canaan was filled with milk cows?  I think so.

This would mean that the cows need to be milked.

It sounds like God gave a huge blessing coupled with responsibility.

We cannot get away from the work ethic.

God put Adam to work in the Garden of Eden.  God put the Chosen People to work in the Promised Land.

And, God is putting us to work.

Today is the day to milk the cows….not to milk the clock!
